“I highly recommend Appalachian Roof Restoration. Ken and his team did a stellar job replacing our roof and gutters. They also provided us with a very competitive price as compared to others and did a nice job following up after the job was complete to make sure we were satisfied. Great communication throughout, too. Much appreciated!”

We’re roofers first, so we look at more than the gutter. While we’re up there we check the roof edge and the board your gutter hangs on, and we’ll show you photos of anything that needs fixing before it gets covered up.

Ken Smith is a third-generation tradesman, and the first in his family to go all the way and become a full contractor. He started out on job sites as a cleaner, watching and learning from the tradesmen around him and taking on more as he got older. They didn’t just teach him how to build. Showing up when you say you will, doing the job right the first time, and always standing behind your work with a firm handshake are the things that have carried him this far.
He has worked in roofing since he was 18 years old. He moved to Western North Carolina, spent years as a roofing technician here, then started Appalachian Roof Restoration because he believed Franklin deserved better work at a fairer price. Same crew, same standards, now doing business as Appalachian Contracting.
He still walks every finished job himself before you get a bill. Based in Franklin, covering Macon, Jackson, Swain and Haywood counties.
“Every roof we restore, every repair we complete, and every project we take on is a reflection of our name and the reputation we’re building.”

Most Franklin homes get seamless K-style gutters. We run a coil of metal through a forming machine in your driveway and make each gutter in one piece, cut to the length of your roofline. Store-bought gutters have a joint every ten feet, and ours only have joints at the corners and the downspouts.
K-style isn’t the only profile we hang. We also install half-round and European box gutters, in aluminum or copper, when your home calls for a different look.

Flat back with a shaped front that looks a little like crown molding. It holds the most water for the money, which is why you see it on most houses around here.

A simple half-circle trough with round downspouts. It suits cabins, craftsman homes and older houses, and it’s the profile most people choose for copper.

Flat bottom and straight sides, so it reads as part of the trim. It carries a lot of water and looks right on modern mountain homes and commercial buildings.

Copper starts out bright, then weathers to brown and eventually green. It never needs paint, and it lasts for decades.

Two things decide what size gutter you need: how much roof drains into it, and how many trees hang over it. Your tree cover sets how many leaves and needles land in that gutter every fall.
A gutter that’s too small for a wooded lot fills up fast, especially without gutter guards. Once it’s packed with leaves it can’t carry a hard rain, so the water spills over the edge and soaks the wood behind it until that wood rots.
Before we quote, Josh or Ken looks at the roof area on each run, where the valleys dump, and what’s growing over your house. Franklin gets about 55 inches of rain a year, so the gutter has to keep moving water even with leaves in it.
Plenty for a modest ranch or a low, simple roofline with few trees close to the house.
What we lead with here. It moves noticeably more water than a 5 inch and gives leaves more room before anything backs up.
Big roofs and heavy tree cover often need more downspouts as well as a bigger gutter, so no single run carries the whole side of the house.

In a yard ringed with hardwoods and white pine, yes. A micro-mesh guard keeps leaves and needles out and cuts down on trips up the ladder. On an open lot with nothing overhead, you can skip them and keep the money.
We install micro-mesh and screen guards. A guard won’t fix a gutter that’s too small or sloped wrong, so we check that first and tell you what we find. Here’s more on gutter guards in Franklin.

Every Appalachian Contracting job is backed by a firm handshake. If it isn’t right, we make it right. No job is fully billed until you are satisfied with it, and the workmanship carries a 3 to 5 year warranty depending on the job.
Six inch on most Franklin homes, five inch on smaller roofs with few trees nearby. It comes down to how much roof drains into each run and how much tree cover drops leaves into it. We size each run to your house and tell you why.
K-style, half-round and European box, in aluminum or copper. Most homes here get seamless K-style aluminum because it moves the most water for the money. Half-round and box gutters are there when your home calls for a different look, and Josh or Ken can walk you through the options at your free quote.
Yes, for one simple reason: fewer seams to leak. A sectional gutter has a joint every ten feet, and joints are where gutters eventually work loose. A seamless run has joints only at the corners and downspouts, so there is far less to fail.
Good micro-mesh guards work well in a leafy, pine-heavy yard, cutting how often the gutters need cleaning. They are not magic, they will not fix undersized gutters or bad slope, and on an open lot they may not be worth the cost. We’ll tell you whether your yard is a good candidate.
Often, yes. Sagging runs, pulled spikes, leaking corners and shallow slope are usually fixable. If the gutters are simply too small for the roof or too far gone, we will show you why on the estimate, but we do not replace what can be repaired to hold for years. See gutter repair in Franklin.
Most homes are a single day. We form the gutters on site, hang them, set the downspouts and clean up, all in one visit unless the house is unusually large or the weather turns.
Our own crew. Josh or Ken measures and quotes the job, Caity schedules it, and Ken walks the finished work before you’re billed.
Yes. NC General Contractor license #109293, with general liability and workers’ compensation on every job. Ask for the certificate and we’ll send it.
