We’re a licensed general contractor in Franklin, NC, for the whole house, roof to foundation. We are based on Riverview Street, we show up when we say we will, and you get a written flat price before a single nail goes in. Ken is a third-generation tradesman who has built in these mountains long enough to know what the weather does to a house.
Thanks for reaching out. A real person here reads every one of these, and we’ll call you back today.

Call 828-634-5200One small favor while you wait. Make us a preferred source on Google. It puts our answers in front of you first the next time you go looking for roofing help around here.
Most people call us for one thing and find out we handle the rest. One contract, one crew, one number to call when you have a question, instead of chasing five different subs to work out whose fault it is.
The craft we were built on. Tear-offs and repairs detailed for the rainfall this region actually gets, not a flat-country spec sheet.
Kitchens, baths and whole-home renovations run by one accountable crew instead of five subs pointing at each other.
Extra bedroom, bigger kitchen, in-law suite. Tied into the existing structure and roofline so it does not read as an afterthought.
Custom homes permitted from footing to punch-list, engineered for mountain lots rather than dropped from a plan book.
Seamless gutters in K-style, half-round or European box, sized to your house and tree cover so the water ends up away from your foundation.
The rest of the building envelope. What keeps weather out once the roof and gutters are handled.
Footings engineered for slope and fill, because a deck on a mountain lot is a structural job before it is a nice view.
Retaining walls, footings, drives and stonework that hold grade on ground that wants to move downhill.
If you have tried to get work done in Franklin, you know how it usually goes. You leave a message and nobody calls back. Someone finally comes out, glances at it, and quotes a number that makes no sense. Another tells you the whole thing has to be torn out when it does not. And then there is the one who takes the deposit and stops showing up.
Here is how we run it instead. Caity answers the phone. You get a scheduled time and we keep it. Before anything starts you get a written flat price, and if part of the job does not actually need doing, we will tell you so, even though the bigger job pays us more. Every job we take is backed by the Firm Handshake Guarantee.
We had issues with a new roof installation that needed to be fixed. Needless to say, the original contractor was NOT going to be asked to come back to our house. We contacted Ken and he was very responsive. He came out to review the job within several days and provided a quote the same day!

Ken Smith is a third-generation tradesman, and the first in his family to go all the way and become a full contractor. He started out on job sites as a cleaner, watching and learning from the tradesmen around him and taking on more as he got older. They didn’t just teach him how to build. Showing up when you say you will, doing the job right the first time, and always standing behind your work with a firm handshake are the things that have carried him this far.
He has worked in roofing since he was 18 years old. He moved to Western North Carolina, spent years as a roofing technician here, then started Appalachian Roof Restoration because he believed Franklin deserved better work at a fairer price. Same crew, same standards, now doing business as Appalachian Contracting.
“Every roof we restore, every repair we complete, and every project we take on is a reflection of our name and the reputation we’re building.”
“Ken was very knowledgeable and was able to figure out a way to fix the problems created by our previous contractor. We accepted the quote and Ken and his crew came back in about a week to complete the job. We now have a beautiful new metal roof that looks great and doesn’t leak!”
“The crew is very experienced and focused on every detail. Their workmanship sets a gold standard. Communications with the office also meets a very high standard and very friendly people. I look forward to working with them in the future.”
“We had a metal roof installation that has plagued us with leakiness for years. The original contractor would not return our calls. We called ARR and Ken gave came the next day and provided a very knowledgeable and fair estimate in order to make things right. They accomplished the repairs on time and on budget.”
“Ken and Shelby are such a pleasure to work with. Very responsive, communicative, honest, and professional.”
“Ken and his crew did a great job on my roof. They arrived when they said they would, worked efficiently and sometimes (with my permission) late into the evening, and cleaned up every day, so there was never any mess. And they gave me a very competitive price.”
“Ken was very responsive to a persistent leak in our metal roof that one different company had given up on. It took a couple times to actually get it resolved but, Ken was extremely responsive, professional and knowledgeable and he stuck with it until it was remedied. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”
“My husband and I moved into a "new" condo and had three major roof leaks. Ken and others worked hard to find a solution to our problem which ended up with us needing a total roof replacement.”
“WNC Roof Restoration provided us with timely responses, competitive prices and a confident start date and time frame of completion, barring any weather emergencies.”
“We needed a new roof. Called them to give us a bid. They gave us a wonderdul price and came back in a few days, put it on, and it’s beautiful.”
“If your looking for a roof, this is the only place to call. They were great to work with, and went above and beyond to make everything perfect”
Every promise below is one most contractors around here cannot make. Ken gives you an arrival window and keeps it, cleans up daily, and puts his name on the result.
The promise the whole company runs on. If it isn’t right, we make it right. No job is fully billed until you are satisfied with it.
Josh or Ken comes out, climbs the roof and writes your estimate. Then Ken personally walks the finished job and signs it off before you are billed.
On top of the manufacturer’s material warranty. Materials fail rarely. Installation is what fails, so that is what we stand behind.
Send us an apples-to-apples estimate and we will match it or beat it. The cheapest bid is usually the most expensive one.
The National Park Service and the Town of Franklin both trusted us to work on their buildings. Public work is awarded on vetting, then held to inspection standards most homes never see.
No sales pitch. No trip charges. No pressure.
Tell us what’s going on. We respond fast and set a time that works.
Josh or Ken walks your property with you. No charge if you don’t proceed.
An honest number in writing, permits pulled. No surprises later.
Clean site, on-time crew, and we stand behind the work after we leave.

North Carolina requires a general contractor license for any job costing $40,000 or more. That is state law, G.S. 87-1, and it covers the addition, the whole-house remodel and the new build. Ken Smith holds that license, and he is the first in his family of tradesmen to carry one.
Checking a license takes about a minute, and it’s worth doing for every contractor who quotes your job, us included. Plumbing and electrical are separate licenses in North Carolina, so licensed plumbers and electricians handle those trades under our contract and we stay accountable for the result.
Every estimate we write is free, whether you hire us or not. No trip charge, no deposit to get a number, no pressure at the end of it. Here is what actually happens.
Take the PDF and think about it. Show it to your spouse, your insurance adjuster, or another contractor. We would rather you be sure than have you agree to something on your porch because someone stood there waiting.
Every Appalachian Contracting job is backed by a firm handshake. If it isn’t right, we make it right. No job is fully billed until you are satisfied with it, and the workmanship carries a 3 to 5 year warranty depending on the job.
Then
Now
Same Ken. Same crew. Same phone number. We still do roofs, we just do more now. Customers kept asking whether we could handle the addition, the kitchen, the whole build. Turns out we could, so we changed the name to match the work.
The crew self-performs roofing, gutters, siding, framing, decks, remodels and new construction. Licensed trades like plumbing, electrical and HVAC are brought in where the code requires a licensed specialist, and Ken stays accountable for the schedule and the result either way.
Franklin is home base with roughly a 50-mile working radius, which covers Macon, Jackson, Swain, Haywood and into Buncombe. Roofing travels farther than trades that need repeat visits. If you are near the edge, call and ask.
Nothing. Josh or Ken walks your property, and you get a written flat price before any work starts. No trip charge and no obligation.
Yes. North Carolina license #109293, and liability insurance on every job. Ask for the certificate any time and we will send it.
If it isn’t right, we make it right. No job is fully billed until you are satisfied with it, and the workmanship carries a 3 to 5 year warranty depending on the job, on top of whatever the manufacturer covers on materials.
Send us an apples-to-apples estimate and we will match it or beat it. We would rather talk you through why the bids differ than lose the job over a number.
Only the name. Same Ken, same crew. Customers kept asking whether we could handle the addition or the kitchen too, so we changed the name to match the work we were already doing.
Free on-site estimate, an honest written price, and a firm handshake guarantee on every job across Western North Carolina.
