A roofing company that grew into a contractor. We started on roofs in Franklin, and roofing is still most of what we do. But homeowners who trusted us with a roof kept calling back about the gutters, the deck, the addition, the whole build — so we stopped handing them to strangers. Today we take on the exterior and most of what sits behind it, across Macon, Jackson, Swain and Haywood counties. Licensed, insured, and small enough that you will deal with the same handful of people from the first call to the last nail.
We started as a roofing company, and roofing is still most of what we do. But customers who had been happy with a roof kept calling back about the addition, the kitchen, the deck, the whole build. For a while the answer was a referral to somebody else. Eventually it stopped making sense to hand good customers to a stranger for work the crew could already do.
Appalachian Roof Restoration is now Appalachian Contracting. Same Ken, same crew, same guarantee. The name just describes the work more honestly than it used to. If you hired us for a roof three years ago, nothing about who shows up has changed.
This is the third name we have worked under, and the reviews reflect that. Some of the older ones on Google say WNC Roof Restoration, some say Appalachian Roofing. Same business, same owner, same crew the whole way through.
“Every roof we restore, every repair we complete, and every project we take on is a reflection of our name and the reputation we’re building.” Ken Smith · Owner-Operator
Caity answers the phone. Josh or Ken writes your estimate and climbs the roof — whichever of them can reach you soonest. Our crew does the work, and our customers name them in reviews. Then Ken walks the finished job himself and signs it off before you are billed. No call center, no commissioned sales rep.
Caity answers when you call or text 828-634-5200. She has been in roofing since 2020, starting in bookkeeping and widening out from there, and joined us in 2024.
She runs scheduling, production coordination, billing and the day-to-day work that keeps a job moving from first call to final invoice. Bachelor’s in Accounting from Western Carolina University, currently finishing her Master’s.
Josh has been in roofing and construction since 1995 — more than 30 years. He came up through nearly every part of commercial roofing: low-slope systems, standing seam metal, and custom sheet metal fabrication.
He worked through Foreman, Superintendent, Service Manager, Estimator and Operations Manager, plus two years running custom home construction. He climbs the roof, writes the estimate against what is actually up there, and tells you when a repair will hold.
Ken is a third-generation tradesman and the first in his family to become a full contractor. He started out on job sites as a cleaner, learning from the tradesmen around him, and has worked roofing since he was 18.
He spent years as a roofing technician for another local company before starting out on his own, because he believed Franklin deserved better work at a fairer price. He writes estimates, climbs roofs and runs the crew — and he personally walks every finished job and signs it off before you are billed. His license number is on every invoice.
North Carolina regulates residential and commercial building through the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors. Ask for any of this in writing and we will send it.
Ken Smith holds North Carolina license #109293. Verifiable through the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors. The number is on every estimate and every invoice.
Liability insurance carried on every job. Ask for the certificate of insurance and we will send it before work begins. An uninsured contractor’s mistake on your property is not covered by your homeowners policy.
Permits pulled through Macon County and the relevant municipality where the work requires them. Unpermitted work becomes your problem at resale, not ours.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park visitor center in Cherokee and the Town of Franklin water plant. Public projects are awarded on vetting and inspected to standards a home never faces.
On top of the manufacturer’s material warranty. Materials fail rarely. Installation is what fails, so that is what we stand behind.
We do not do plumbing, electrical, HVAC, landscaping, pools, septic or tree work. Licensed trades come in where code requires a specialist. We would rather refer it than fake it.
Every Appalachian Contracting job is backed by a firm handshake. If it isn’t right, we make it right. No job is fully billed until you are satisfied with it, and the workmanship carries a 3 to 5 year warranty depending on the job.
Ken Smith, the owner, or Josh Smith, our senior estimator — whichever of them can reach you soonest. Both climb the roof themselves and both write the estimate. You are not handed to a commissioned sales rep who has never held a tool.
Ken is a third-generation tradesman, the first in his family to become a full contractor, and has worked in roofing since he was 18. Josh, our senior estimator, started in 1995 and has more than 30 years across commercial roofing, sheet metal and custom home construction. The company name is only a few years old — the people are not.
Only the name changed. Same Ken, same crew. Customers kept asking whether we could handle the addition or the kitchen too, so we changed the name to match the work we were already doing. Appalachian Roof Restoration is now Appalachian Contracting.
